Botox & Fillers
BOTOX
Botox is a toxin which at the right dosage is well tolerated with few side effects. It paralyzes the muscle at the site injection, relaxing and smoothing those facial areas. It is used to relax muscle contractions that cause crows feet around the eyes and forehead frown or worry lines. Botox is also effectively used for other issues such as a migraine, armpit and hand hyperhidrosis (excess of sweating), torticollis, facial palsy, muscle contractions in certain paralysis, bladder incontinence, muscular problems of the eyes, keloid scars, etc.
For facial wrinkles, the effect can take three days to become noticeable and then last from four to six months. Some patients report even longer lasting results. It is important to keep the injection area(s) iced the day of the procedure, and if there is bruising, keep the area shielded from the sun.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Dr. Sigler prices Botox in international units (the actual amount of Botox received) versus volume such as cc, which is a reconstituted amount of Botox mixed with a saline solution. Some providers charge by volume and there is no way a patient can know how much Botox they are actually receiving per injection.
FILLERS
Fillers are used for improving areas where the volume has been lost or where there is an unfavorable depth on the face such as the nasolabial folds or marionette lines. The most accepted filler now is a hyaluronic acid which can be presented in different brands. Dr. Sigler prefers FDA approved brands such as Juvederm and Restylane. There are other brands that are gaining popularity and have been also used by Dr. Sigler such as Belotero and Filorga. The length of the lifespan of a filler depends on its density and chemical composition. There are some that last 6 months only and others last from one to two years. Most patients using fillers are on some kind of maintenance schedule for treatment when the effect wears off.
Adding volume to the lips and cheekbones can also be accomplished using filler injections. The injector's expertise is very important to ensure a natural look using the right amount of filler, and if not applied appropriately, there can be negative consequences like skin necrosis in the treated area.
Prices vary depending on the brand, lifespan, and dosage of product, and generally is measured in volumes such as milliliter or cc. Many fillers now contain lidocaine, an anesthetic, making administration of the product less painful. Applying ice to the treatment area five minutes in advance also helps with the numbing effect.
