An optical fiber with the ferrule is inserted into an adapter so that light is emitted to a terminal device. The adapter is connected to an optical fiber by a predetermined length. Recently, the speed of data communication is increasing. In order to meet this speed, a small connector which is simple in construction and excellent in reliability should be developed. U.S. Pat. Nos. 5,317,663, 5,433,504, etc. disclose small connectors each comprising a housing, a plurality of terminals, a lid, and a metal shell. The housing has a concave portion at which a projecting portion of the metal shell is formed. The projecting portion defines a side wall of a receiving space. The housing further has a through hole for guiding an optical fiber. The terminal is assembled in the receiving space and is held by the housing. The lid has a first insertion portion. The first insertion portion is inserted into the housing so that it closes the projecting portion of the metal shell. The terminal is formed at the first insertion portion. The lid also has a second insertion portion. The second insertion portion has a step portion formed thereon. When the lid is inserted into the receiving space, the step portion of the second insertion portion is engaged with the projecting portion of the metal shell, thus preventing the lid from being removed. However, when the second insertion portion is inserted into the receiving space, the step portion of the second insertion portion sometimes fails to engage with the projecting portion of the metal shell.
